Missing My Class

To My Favorite Kids,
I just wanted to drop a little note to let you know how much I miss you. After a long car ride, I have made it to Arizona. I saw lots and lots of cacti along the drive. While coming here, I drove through "Joshua Tree National Forest." I couldn't help but think how fun it would be to have a field trip with my favorite kids to see this pretty desert landscape with Joshua Tree's and Cacti.

The Arizona deseret is filled with Saguaro Cacti. These plants grow very slowly -- perhaps an inch a year -- but to a great height, 15 to 50 feet. The largest plants, with more than 5 arms, are estimated to be 200 years old. That's ancient! Most old Saguaro have 5 arms and are about 30 feet tall. WOW! I think it is amazing how big this ancient plants grow.

The best part of the Saguara Cactus is the flowers. Creamy-white, 3-inch-wide flowers with yellow centers bloom May and June. Clustered near the ends of branches, the blossoms open during cooler desert nights and close again by next midday. The sweet flower nectar, together with the color of the flower, attracts birds, bats and insects. I guess it is a tastey treat in the hot desert. :D

After a lot of hard work, I am almost done unpacking. Without a pile of boxes in every room, our apartment is looking more like home - just hotter:D.

It is still hot here. Yesterday's high was 110 degrees. WOW! We drink LOTS of water - and frozen chocolate milk on a straw - fudgsicles.:D

My days are busy unpacking and job hunting, which keep my mind busy. However, when I have a quiet moment tears fill myeyes and heart for all I miss at home in Salt Lake. Throughout the day, I think about my kids and what they are doing. I know they are having lots of fun with Mrs. Panter, but wish I could be there with them.

The little things are what I miss the most: caotic mornings with 15 kids telling me about silly adventures after school, quiet taps on my shoulder to get my attention, the lull of talking in the classroom, big eyes looking up at you (even though you are the short teacher), small hands staying in at recess to help, big smiles, and twinkles of laughter.

Most of all I miss my goodbye hugs. So I am sending one through this letter and hope it gets to you. Remember I am always in your heart as your best friend and cheerleader. When you need a little cheer or hug, just hold your owl and my love will find you.

I can't wait to hear how much fun you have had with Mrs. Panter this week.

Dear Parents and Students,

It has been my honor and pleasure to teach your children for the first part of the year. My favorite memories with your students have been the sparkle in their eyes & confident smiles in accomplishments.

We have lived, loved, laughed, played, studied, learned, and enriched our lives together this year. I wish it could go on indefinitely, but life changes come expectedly and unexpectedly. I am grateful for the honor and privilege to be a part of their learning and growing this year.

I hope you know I am always interested in my students: wherever they go, whatever they do, whoever they become. Their joys and sorrows, I’ll be happy to share. MY students are a great treasure of my heart, never to be forgotten.

I have full confidence that the students will continue to progress with Mrs. Panter this year.

Dear Parents and Students,

It is hard to believe school has been in session for 4 weeks. Our learning adventures have escalated this past week in so many ways. Together we are growing in a variety of ways.

Students eyes glow with many connections to their world around them. We have been investigating Utah's environments, plants, and animals. I love their creative insights and determination. It is neat to see their brain make connections between new vocabulary words like adaptations and everyday observations. Some amazing adaptations we have studied are camouflage, types of feet, eye positions, and breathing strategies.

Throughout the week we will continue to discover Utah's spectacular environments. Students will explore forests in science and language arts activities. I hope you will make conversation and connections with students about the exciting world around them.

Dazzling Deserts

Dear Parents and Students,

I just want to say a special thank you for all the sweet emails, encouragement, and support with this surprising change in life. Thank you!

Each day is magical with your students. I love teaching and learning with them each day. When the time comes, I will be sad to leave them. I appreciate how much they have taught me in the short time we have been together.

I love their creative insights and determination. This week students were amazed and little "grossed out" to discover the adaptations plants and animals have to live in a desert. We explored the way a cactus has small pores, waxy surface, and wide spread roots to capture and hold the greatest amount of water. Together we even dissected an Aloe Vera cactus plant. Their eyes were surprised to see the green goop inside. :)

Throughout the week we will continue to discover Utah's spectacular environments. Students will explore forests in science and language arts activities. I hope you will make conversation and connections with students about the exciting world around them.

Wonderful Wetlands

Dear Parents and Students,

I just want to say a special thank you to all who have donated school supplies to our classroom. Every little bit helps. Thank you!

I hope your students are loving our daily learning activities celebrations. There is not doubt I know I am!! I love their creative insights and determination. This week one student made a clever connection between line graph increase trends and gas prices. Wow!! You sure have bright students. I am lucky to be their teacher.

Utah is a spectacular place to live. Students are exploring our three environments in science and language arts: wetlands, forests, and deserts. This week we did a few experiments to demonstrate the purpose of our wetlands. Students can tell you that wetlands serve to protect the land from flooding, filtering the water, and providing a home for animals, especially migrating birds. Splashing in the water was a great way to discover these sacred habitats.

Bon Voyage 4th Grade

Dear Parents and Students,

What a fun first week we had getting to know each other, the Bobcat Big 3, and adjusting to 4th grade routines and rules. The best part of the week was the little moments we shared laughing together at the day's events. Your students are absolutely amazing! I am so lucky to be their teacher this year. I know we will learn and grow lots together!

Thank you for taking time to visit during our Back-to-School Night on Wednesday. It was a pleasure to meet each of you with your super students. I hope you have felt welcome and comfortable to contact me with any questions, concerns, or celebrations.

I have a great passion for teaching with its contagious learning experiences. It is magical to help children explore the world of reading adventures, mathematical puzzles, captivating historical events, science discoveries, art creations, and everyday wonders. I find in return I am a student to their magical ideas. I love the watching the twinkles and sparkles of growing as my students change throughout the year. Thank you for letting me be a part of their magical journey of discovery.

Hoot Hooray for Wise 4th Graders!

Dear Parents & Students,

Welcome to a new school year! It is so exciting to start a new school year with each of you. I am excited to be your 4^th grade teacher and am looking forward to a fun year. We are going to have some great learning adventures together!

I thought I would let you know a little bit about me. The most important thing to know about me is I love being a Butterfield Canyon Bobcat. I have taught 4^th grade at Butterfield Canyon for 5 years, and 6^th grade before that at Riverside Elementary. I believe 4^th grade is the BEST grade! I love teaching and working with kids. They are always teaching me something new. I know we will grow lots together this year.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, writing, gardening, playing outdoors, and traveling. My favorite treats are chocolate milk (through a straw), homemade cookies, and ice cream. I love reading, especially children’s books. It is hard to choose one favorite book, but some of them are: The Sister's Grimm Series, Tale of Despereaux, Fablehaven, and The Princess Academy.

In 4^th grade, we will be exploring many fiction and nonfiction books; writing creative and true stories; discovering new math tricks like multi-digit multiplication, long division, fractions, decimals, measurement, and geometry; traveling through Utah history with Native Americans, Spanish explorers, trappers, and pioneers; and investigating our state’s water resources, weather, rocks and minerals, soils, and environments. I can’t wait to start our learning journey!

I am excited to meet all of you on the first day of school on July 25 beginning at 8:55.

It has been my honor and pleasure to teach your students this year. We have shared some really great memories this year.

This poem I sent home earlier this week expresses some of my feelings of appreciation for allowing me to be your students’ teacher this year:

I give you back your student, the same child you confidently entrusted to my care last fall. I give them back inches taller, months wiser, more responsible, and more mature then they was then.

Although they would have attained their growth in spite of me, it has been my pleasure and privilege to watch their personality unfold day by day and marvel at this splendid miracle of development.

I give them back reluctantly, for having spent one year together in the narrow confines of a crowded classroom, we have grown close, have become a part of each other, and we shall always retain a little of each other.

Ten years from now if we met on the street, they and I, a light will shine to our eyes, a smile to our lips, and we shall feel the bond of understanding once more, this bond we feel today.

We have lived, loved, laughed, played, studied, learned, and enriched our lives together this year. I wish it could go on indefinitely, but give them back I must. Take care of them, for they are precious.

Remember that I shall always be interested in them and their destiny, wherever they goes, whatever they do, whoever they become. Their joys and sorrows, I’ll be happy to share.

I shall always be their friend.

Fun, Fantastic Fourth Graders

It is hard to believe only two weeks are left for the year! WOW! I have enjoyed each learning experience, laughing moment, and magical memories I have made with your students. I will miss them as they leave for 5th grade, & hope they will visit often:D. Thank you for sharing your children with me this year. They have been "mine" for the year, which makes it difficult to let them go. I am so proud of their hard work and progress!

Children have always brought such great joy into my life. Their genuine, innocent love is contagious. I love that my job is surrounded by little people with such big hearts.:D

I love teaching and learning from my students. The magic of learning is found in their innocence and simplicity. Trust, faith, and hope glimmer in their eyes. Children remind me that the present is playful and the future is attainable. I am amazed at their sense of trust and malleability to change. This is an excellent quality essential to growth.

Each day my students help me continue to develop important traits of love, kindness, friendship, joy, risk, and trust. I love the way they help me laugh and take time to play.

A teacher once said, “Children are the epitome of innocence, they are the epitome of purity, they are the epitome of love, they are the epitome of hope and gladness in this difficult and troubled world." Thank you for sharing your students with me this year.

Bravo! Hat's Off to our Wax Museum!

Parents and Students,

BRAVO!!! The students were absolutely AMAZING in our class Utah Wax Museum. I was delighted to hear and watch them perform magnificiently. Their performances definitely showed how hard they worked to prepare and write their reports. Each learned so much about their famous person in Utah history. I think they made history with their excellent performance!! Thank you for all your help and support in making it possible. It definitely was a team effort!

In science this week, our class has begun to discover the power of our bodies. Students have explored the nervous and circulatory system last week. This week, we will investigate the skeletal and muscular system. It is amazing to see their eyes twinkle with the magic their bodies give them to do some many things.

On Friday, students also participated in "Vehicle Day." Students explored emergency, construction, and safety vehicles. They especially liked stepping inside each vehicle. Good thing they didn't have their driver's license! Otherwise they may have driven away:D.

4th Grade Olympians

Parents and Students,

This week students became olympians as we journeyed to the Alf Engen Ski Museum in Park City. On our field trip, students participated in an interactive learning activities that are aligned with the Fourth Grade Utah Core Curriculum. On our "Magic School Bus" tour we explored the museum, saw the ludge starting line, looked out over the ski jump, and had a indoor picnic. The students were well-behaved and excited to see all spectacular events that happened with the olympics were here. I hope the students enjoyed this unique opportunity. & your families can return soon.

Students will need to bring the Wax Museum speeches everyday this week as they will be given time to work on memorizing and practicing them. Just a reminder Wax Museum Reports are due on Thursday, May 26th. Our Wax Museum will be Friday, May 27th from 12:30-1:45 pm. On Friday, students will be participating in "Vehicle Day," so it would be best for students to change into their costumes during lunch recess. It is going to be a fun imaginary field trip to Utah's past and present heroes. We hope to see you there!

On Friday, students earned a 100% attendance party. To celebrate this, students had a make shift "drive-in" movie. Students were able to watch some of Toy Story 3. I think they enjoyed pretending we were at a real drive-in:D!

The magic of learning was sparked in our class this week. I am so proud of all the students' hard work, determination, and excitement to celebrate their learning. It is hard to believe this year together in 4th grade is drawing to an end. I am so grateful for the chance to have been part of their growth this year. If students have not begun their report, they will be given time this day to work on their report at school so that they can best be prepared for the wax museum on May 27th.

On Wednesday, May 18th, we will be off on a "Magic School Bus" adventure of our own to the Alfen Ski Museum in Park City Utah. On our field trip, students will be participate in an interactive learning activities that are aligned with the Fourth Grade Utah Core Curriculum. The program themes include:

■Science and Technology - how they affect a ski jumper
■Weather and Water - what the weather cycles mean to Utah
■Skiing Comes to Utah - from miners sliding on shovels to hosting the Olympic Winter Games of 2002
■From Silver Ore to White Gold - the economic effect of skiing and winter sports on the region's economy

Another fun activity this week is Literacy Night on Thursday, May 19th at 6:30 pm. Students "Great Artist" artwork and "Bare Books" will be on display. I hope you will join us for a night of celebrating their creating, composing, and growth.

Super Hero Learning

Hooray for our super hero students! This past week they began our yearend celebrations (tests). I am so proud of the great effort they are making to show their shining stars! They are amazing heroes of learning!

To best further prepare students for testing, please help your students with these 3 keys of success:

1) Get a good night's rest.

2) Arrive on time to school.

3) Eat a good breakfast.

Due to end of year testing this week, there will be no spelling or vocabulary homework this week. Students are encouraged to practice their math facts this week to achieve the Brilliant Bobcat Requirement.

Additionally, I hope students will use the time they have this week to work on their Wax Museum Report due on May 26^th. Hoppy Easter!

Dear Parents and Students,

Hoppy Spring Break! The students were excited for a long weekend of fun this past week. Many were "hopping" and "hoping" for Easter eggs, swimming, warm weather, baseball, and short getaways. I hope the Easter Bunny brings lots of fun for all of them.

In our short week together, the students worked hard! We continue to investigate weather. This week we studied weather maps and graphs. I guess just looking outside won't help a meteorologist predict the weather accurately. Instead, students have carefully studied data to help predict weather like a meteorologist, including air pressure, wind speed and direction, cloud cover, and temperature. They are getting quite good at making weather forecasts. Next week when we return, students will put their skills to practice in grading the weather man on the news. Will the students be better at predicting the weather than the news? My bet is on the students!:D

Be sure to look for science homework in which students need to watch and record the daily forecast NEXT WEEK, BEGINNING APRIL 26TH.

Customary or Metric System? Everywhere else in the world uses the Metric System but the United States. We use the Customary System. This week students explored customary units of capacity, including cups, pints, quarts, and galloons. We brainstormed all that could be measured with these units. Students were great to think of baking examples, so be sure to let them help you with some Easter cookies or cupcakes!

To take the tests on line, follow the directions below. If you do not have access to the Internet, please let me know ASAP, and I will get you a paper copy to take at home instead. The advantages to the computer tests are that students get immediate feedback on their performance. They will know right away what their scores are, if they got the question correct, and if not, what the correct answer is and a possible explanation. Pressure for Air

Dear Parents and Students,

Hooray for your amazing, awesome, aspiring, all-stars!!!!!! It has been a great week learning and growing with each of them. I appreciate the respect they give me and the friendship we share. It is hard to believe they are almost on their way to another year. I wish they could stay, but so glad I was able to teach them this year. Please give each of them an extra wink and smile for me today!!!

This week's crazy Utah spring weather has been PERFECT, not to play in, but to experiment with weather. We made weather vanes, used a anemometer, barometer, rain gauge (before the lawn mower destroyed it), thermometer, and hygometer. WOW! What great metereologists we have.

We also did some crazy mad meteroeologist experiments with air pressure: mixing oil and water, suctioning paper to a cup upside down, pulling a balloon into a bottle, and keeping a ping pong ball in a funnel. Air pressure became a real life magic and wonder to discover right before our eyes!! All the experiments helped the students understand two important ideas about air pressure:

1) High air pressure rises above low air pressure. The disagreement between the two creates wind in an effort to create balance. The stronger the winds, the bigger the storm.

2) Low air pressure creates wind, clouds, and storms.

Be sure to look for science homework in which students need to watch and record the daily forecast NEXT WEEK, BEGINNING APRIL 26TH.

Meters, grams, liters, oh my!!! We compared these measurement units to everyday objects including a fingernail, pinkie finger, paperclip, and canteloupe. Can you think of how many times a day we use measurement? Here are just a few examples: grocery shopping, fueling the car, building, playing sports, taking a drink, measuring growth and so much more. I hope you will encourage your students to continue this and other learning connections at home and in the car.

Our CRT Celebrations will soon on May 2. In an effort to help students CONTINUE build confidence and perform to their best ability, students’ homework will focus on reviewing all that we have learned this year. Springing into CRT Celebrations

Dear Parents and Students,

I don't know if spring has decided to come or not with all this crazy weather: sunshine, clouds, and snow. Even though spring may be unsure, I am FOR SURE excited to return to school on Monday, April 11th! I hope you have enjoyed your break with so many field trips and hands on adventures at home. What fun we are going to have as we return to school on Monday!

In the midst of our crazy Utah spring weather, students will have an opportunity to explore concepts of weather. This week our class will be constructing a wind vane and anemometer. These instruments are used to measure wind direction and wind speed. Students will also have the opportunity to use and explore other weather instruments' function in predicting the weather, including barometer, rain gauge, and thermometer. What out your students are going to become the local forecasters with all they learn about weather!

Be sure to look for science homework in which students need to watch and record the daily forecast.

After finishing our geometry unit before going off-track, we will begin our measurement unit on Monday. Students will have the opportunity to explore metric (ie: mm, cm, m, mL, L, g, kg) and customary units (ie: c, pt., qt, gal). Can you think of how many times a day we use measurement? Here are just a few examples: grocery shopping, fueling the car, building, playing sports, taking a drink, measuring growth and so much more. I hope you will encourage your students to continue this and other learning connections at home and in the car.

Our CRT Celebrations will soon on May 2. In an effort to help students build confidence and perform to their best ability, students’ homework will focus on reviewing all that we have learned this year.

Dear Parents and Students,

Happy Spring! March 20th marks the official first day of spring. However, I feel the students had an extra spring of energy in them this week with the sunshine and warmer weather. I hope it will continue on our off-track break.

Students were excited for their upcoming off-track adventures, including vacations, sleeping in, visiting the new Herriman Recreation Center, and of coarse their "Wax Museum Reports." I reminded students to use their time off to have fun and get a head start on their report:D. I hope you will continue to encourage your students to read each day they are off track to keep things fresh.

On Friday, students participated in the school's "Monster Math" contest. I was proud each student's determination to perform their best. Student's demonstrated great team work and problem solving skills. Way to go Bobcats!

DUE THURSDAY, MAY 26TH

Dear Parents and Students,

Throughout this year, 4th graders have been and are studying Utah history. There have been many people throughout Utah history that have made important changes, discoveries, inventions, and ideas in history. All 4th graders will be involved in researching, reading, and writing a biography about a person significant to Utah’s history. Students will participate in a wax museum for parents and the school student body to share their learning about the person they studied.
The requirements for this project include:

1. Read and research information about your person. Information can be found in nonfiction informational books found at the school or local library, biographies, encyclopedias, and on the Internet. Please make sure to work with a parent when looking information up on the Internet. Some helpful websites include:

3. Prepare an oral report to present during the wax museum. Oral reports should not exceed 3 minutes. Pick out some favorite information from your written biography report to share with the others during the wax museum. Practice the oral report several times before you give it aloud. Remember to use eye contact, and good vocal expression. Make your report interesting and fun! You will receive a grade on your oral presentation and another grade for your written report.

4. Wax Museum. On the day of your class’ wax museum presentations, please dress up like the person you studied. If it adds to your presentation, you may bring visual aides that can fit on a students’ desk.

Wet and Wild Adventures!

Dear Parents and Students,

Spring is definitely making school wet and wild! Students are enjoying the warmer weather, despite its unpredictability. Just as the sun energizes the water cycle, I am finding it excites the students as well.

We have continued a study of geometry this week in investigating symmetry and transformations. Students enjoyed using pentominoes and their bodies to model the movements of slides, flips and turns. They now know these words are describes as transformation, rotation, and reflection. What fun it has been to explore shapes, symmetry and reflections. I am amazed at the students everyday connections, including the reflection of the words "race car," "mom," and "was saw." I hope you will encourage your students to continue their learning connections at home and in the car.

History has really come alive in our "Historical Fiction" genre study. Students have read books about the Civil Rights Movement in Abby Takes a Stand, immigrants at Ellis Island in Orphan of Ellis Island, Titanic sinking in SOS Titanic, Ireland's famine in Nory Ryan's Song, and Mexican Revolution in Esperanza Rising. It has been fun to see the students minds explore the exciting past and how it has effected our present day. Way to go Bobcats!

Dear Parents and Students,

"Oh the Places You'll Go" with 4th graders. What a week of fun with learning. Dr. Seuss said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” I think our class has shown this to be true this week.

Students transformed into drops of water in creating skits to show the steps in the water cycle. Our friend "Drippy" splashed and soaked his way through wet and wild water cycle. Watch out for examples of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation all around you this week.

We have begun a new math unit: Geometry. Students are exploring angles and lines: acute, obtuse, right, perpendicular, intersecting, and parallel. Our eyes have scavengered our classroom and playground for everyday examples. I hope you will encourage your students to continue their scavenger hunt at home and in the car.

Coyotes, minks, and BEAVERS oh my! In connection with our study of Utah trappers, students had an opportunity to meet a mountain man this week. He is the most famous mountain man - Etmo! Student loved hearing his courageous hunting adventures alongside famous Utah trappers. Thank you Etmo for your time and stories!

Splashing Water & Fantastic Fractions

Hooray for a great celebrations last week at PTC! Thank you for attending such an important meeting of your students' progress. Each student truly shined with delight as we shared the highlights of their growth as a 4th grader. I truly enjoy learning and growing with them each day. Science continues to bring splashing and smoking thrills. This week we continued to explore Utah's water resources & water cycle by observing and experimenting with water. On Wednesday, we tried an experiment to make a cloud. After several attempts and creative ideas, our experiment did not turn out. However, our super scientists students were optimistic through it all. Students have discovered how the water cycle is all around us everyday: dew, frost, precipitation, steam when cooking, water on a glass of juice, steaming windows, and so much more. On Tuesday, we had a special visit from the Salt Lake Aquarium's Water Van. Their presentation on Utah's water resources was a great "splash" with experiments and animals! Students explored Utah's water resources & water cycle by observing environment models and animals. We will continue to explore the water cycle over the next few weeks with many "soaking" water adventures.

Wow! It is hard to believe our second PTC has arrived. Your Bobcats continue to learn and grow in so many ways. I am proud of their hard work and determination. Dear Parents and Students,

Even though the weather has kept our class cooped inside all week, the students have explored many exciting things. I was grateful for their enthusiasm and patience in keeping entertained while staying inside. It is fun to watch them play and interact together. Dominoes, chess, checkers, and dramatic plays are the favorites. Thank you Bobcats for the fun this week!

On Thursday, students began a dinosaur or animal investigation. Students are reading and researching about an animal of their choice. After becoming an "expert," students will create a mini-poster to share the fantastic facts they have learned. It has been fun to hear all their learning connections and growth. They are quick to tell me, "Mrs. Yates, did you know . . .?" or "Mrs. Yates look at this animal/dinosaur's adaptations!" Seeing their creativity and connections is truly the magic of teaching!

Fantastic Fossils

What amazing learning adventures our class has shared this past week! It was delightful to be back on track exploring our world. The excitement of being back created a magical energy.

February is a month of memorials to our history- including our heritage as Americans. This past week we began our study of historical fiction. Students minds sparked with enthusiasm as we studied important events in history. History is in action as we read stories of characters, fictional and fact. Students will become great historians as we continue to read historical fiction in our guided reading groups, as a class, and for the February book reports! Remember they are due on Friday, February 25th.

Students transformed into paleontologists as we began our study of Utah's Fossils! Utah is famous for its fossils, including 30 complete dinosaur fossils, trilobites, and footprints. Students keep me on my toes with their inquisition about dinosaurs and creatures of Utah's past. Fossils tell wonderful stories of our environment, landscape, and history. Invite your students to share their fossil learning adventures with you.

On Thursday, students explored watercolor painting as they recreated a painting by a Japanese artist Hokusai. Their images turned out amazing! I loved watching them take such care and detail to do their best. Way to go Bobcats!

Welcome 2011 Bobcats! I hope you had a wonderful off-track filled with wonderful winter activities: sledding, shoveling, family field trips, and more. I am looking forward to seeing you soon at school. I can't wait to explore our world with you! I have missed your glowing faces and bright smiles. It will be sure to warm me up in this cold weather!!

The magic of history seems to capture our attention this time of year. In reading we are going to read and study the historical fiction genre. Reading puts history in the making right before our eyes! How exciting it is to discover the past with a character in a book. I know you will become great historians as we begin reading historical fiction!

Another exciting adventure we are about to begin is investigating Utah's Fossils! Utah is famous for its fossils, including 30 complete dinosaur fossils, trilobites, and footprints. Oh so much to learn and experiment with as dinosaur detectives!! Through our study of Utah fossils, we will discover what Utah used to be like millions of years ago. Can you imagine or believe Utah was once a tropical beach? Fossils will open Utah's environment changing story from tropical to desert. Awesome!

Happy Holidays! What joy your students bring to my life! I am proud of the hard work and growth students have demonstrated throughout this year. It has been amazing to watch their progress and growth in their learning adventures.

Seeing this growth leads me to encourage the students and you to continue to use skills we have learned to keep their academic skills sharp and enhance their learning when they return. I appreciate that many families have things planned besides schoolwork during this time, which is needful. I hope you can find time in your fun off-track activities to take time for these suggested activities and even them include them in the fun!

Off-track Suggested Continued Learning Activities:

1. READING

· Independent Reading: Please read at least 150 minutes per week or 30 minutes a day and record your reading in your school planners as you usually do, including parent initials. I will be entering these reading minutes for a grade when we return as usual. Reading is an essential practice of a lifelong skill.

2. MATH

· Multiplication and Division timetables learning and practice: It is critical that students keep practicing their Times Tables. This can be done with flash cards, using the Internet game “Times Attack,” or timed tests.

3. SCIENCE

· Plant and Animal Photo Scavenger Hunt: While exploring the neighborhood or on travel adventures, look for weathering, erosion, and soil concepts we have studied. Take a picture and bring it to share with the class.

4. TECHNOLOGY

Dynamite Division!

Dear Parents and Students,

Congratulations to our mighty mathematicians! This past week, students "celebrated" their learning of division. It was neat to see their confidence grow over the past few weeks. When I first introduced long division, many of the students were terrified! Now I hear their whispers and see their smiles of confidence. I am proud of their hard work, courage, and determination. Dynamite!

Students were excited to get "down and dirty" this week in science. We began investigating soil - not dirt! In was exciting to make and even taste soil together. Together we made a cake to represent the parts of soil:

cake mix= parent material of rocks and minerals (45%)

water = water (25%)

air creating by stirring = air (25%)

eggs & oil = organic material (5%)

Additionally, we compared the 3 types of soils: sand, silt, and clay. By spring, your students will be expect gardeners to take care of the yard! :D

Our class reading groups finished our science investigation nonfiction books this week. Students exemplified awesome connections as we reviewed science topics. Coming up this week, our class will be reading and learning about how the pioneers celebrated Christmas many years ago. The spirit of the season is glowing in our classroom as we share stories together.

In writing, students are practicing using transition words in their writing in an "If you give/take . . ." story. Their imaginations are quite fun! I hope you will ask them to share with you soon!

December's adventures ring with cheer in our classroom. Students imaginations and fantasies sparkle and glow with delight at this special time of year. The magic of learning is found in glimpses of growth.

This week we shared holiday stories together, including my story of my Grandpa's great capture of Santa's boot. Whenever my Grandpa shared this story with me, I remember the magic of this holiday season is found in giving and sharing gifts of love. One of my favorite gifts of love is the love my students share of learning and growing. Thank you for sharing your students with me!

Our class reading groups began new reading books this week, focusing on the nonfiction genre. The students are investigating different science topics including, rocks, minerals, ecosystems, and chemical changes. It is neat to see their twinkling smiles as they create science and reading connections. Way to go Bobcats!!

On Friday, students enjoyed our school "Story Telling Festival." Lauren did a fantastic job in sharing a story. Wow! What courage to present in front of the school! We were very proud of her.

Our weathering and erosion unit draws to a close at the beginning of this next week. We explored erosion with the forces of wind, water, ice and gravity. It is so fun to do experiments with them. They are truly super scientists!!

This week students will continue to explore long division. Although division is a scary word, it becomes friendly with the knowledge that it is "backwards multiplication." Please continue to support your student in practicing multiplication and division facts at home.

Ready Set Action

Parents and Students,

Ready, Set, Action! Students were amazing actors this week in creating scene skits of their guided reading group mystery books. Groups used their imaginations to transform their mental images of their reading into real life. It was fun to see all their costumes, facial expressions, and set props. They were thrilled to share some of their books with the other students. As each group was finished with their books, many students said, "Is there another book?" My response was, "Of course!" I hope you will discuss what your students are reading in and out of school to encourage their love for reading to grow.

On Wednesday, students celebrated "Grandparents' Day." What joy it was to see students sharing some school moments with their grandparents. I believe grandparents have a magic spell of making all their grandchildren feel so special- like no one else. They are "spoiling" experts of love and laughter. Rockin' Rockhounds

Parents and Students,

Rockhound scientists were twisting and shouting with a shake, rattle, and roll. The magic of earth formations brought awestruck eyes as we experimented and learned about weathering and erosion. Students explored wind abrasion weathering by stirring chalk in salt, making the chalk change color as pieces of sediment mixed in. It was also amazing to see their anticipation to observe heat expansion as we heated glass rocks and cooled them quickly. The magic of experiments made great moments of learning. I hope they will continue to have a magical eye for shaping of the many rocks surrounding them. We will continue our rock investigations with weathering and erosion. Nature's forces have sure created magnificent wonders in Utah.

On Thursday and Friday, our classroom was filled with County brochures, posters, and floats. Wow! They were dazzling, demonstrations of their hard work. Milestones to Freedom

Parents and Students,

What a memorable week we have had together. Throughout the week in enrichment, students practiced and applied ways to prevent bullying. I hope they were able to share some of their learning and experiences with you.

On Thursday, Butterfield Canyon Elementary had the privilege to participate in the "Milestones to Freedom" assembly and activities. Students discovered the process of obtaining citizenship in America and the great opportunities we have here. It was delightful to hear their expressions of gratitude, thoughtful questions, and praises for our wonderful county. Let Freedom Ring!

It is finally here, our Utah County Fair. Mark your calendars if you haven't already for the due date on Thursday, November 18th. The "County Fair" will be Friday, November 19th at 12:45-1:45 pm. I know the students have worked hard to complete this project and are excited to share. For a complete report, students need a county brochure, poster/float presentation, and 2 minute oral report. For the oral report, students should be able to share 5-10 facts about their county to the fair participants. We hope to see you there!

Dear Parents and Students,

Thank you for coming to Parent Teacher Conferences this week. It was a pleasure to visit with you and celebrate your student's progress. Each day I am amazed at their learning connections and growth. It is tickling to see their bright smiles as we explore and discover. I am grateful for the opportunity to discover earth's wonders.

I hope you will remember and review the SEP goals we made together. Find a visiable spot to post their goals: on the fridge, bulletin board, mirror, or somewhere that is seen often. Most of all seek opportunities to share your students' learning experiences each day. This can be in the car, at dinner, and/or reading our blog:). Thank you for your constant support and encouragement. It truly makes a difference!

Our multiplication journey continues this week as we review 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication. We will also use the strategies we have learned to take the challenge of 3-digit by 2 digit multiplication. It is exciting to hear their multiplication stories of "Super Zero" as they solve the pproblems. Hooray for Super Zero mathematicians!

Students are really becoming expert "Rockhounds." Each day a new student brings in a rock to share with the class. It is contagious to feel their energy to learn and discover about the rocks around them. Utah is definitely famous for their many rock formations throughout the state.

A funny story for the week happened during science. One student raised their hand to tell me a bug was on their desk. I walked over their thinking it would be a big bug, but there crawling on the paper was a tiny knat. I squashed it. The students were scared, so I explained that we had learned about insects being the biggest population of bugs and to keep the environment in check it was okay to kill bugs sometimes. Another students sitting by me, raised his eyebrows sighing, "Thank goodness for frogs!" What a fun animal connection!!

A County Report Countdown begins this week, with just over one week until the "County Fair." Mark your calendars if you haven't already for the due date on Thursday, November 18th. The "County Fair" will be Friday, November 19th at 12:45-1:45 pm. We hope to see you there!

A Spooktacular Halloween

Dear Parents and Students,

Tricks and treats of learning filled our classroom last week. It was thrilling to see students engaged in science tricks of exploring igneous and sedimentary rocks. They are so fascinated with investigating the world around them. Throughout the week many students have shared their learning connections with me, even those experiences when they proved their parents wrong with floating rocks!

Students continue to be engaged in our mystery book adventures. We continue to look for clues and evidence to find answers to puzzling questions. I love watching them sneak peek further in their reading assignments to find more information. Their excitement is contagious!! I hope you will check in with them often while they read their mystery book report books.

Along with Halloween celebrations on Friday, students honored Red Ribbon Week throughout the week. We were lucky to have an assembly with Mr. Bagley, a local cartoonists. His cartoon drawings were fascinating to watch and helpful in reminding students the importance of staying drug free. Students even had the opportunity to learn to draw with him.

Students will continue to learn the tricks of 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication this week. They are excited to see their eyes glow as they learn and grow. Please help them review multiplication facts at home to make this challenging adventure easier.

Super Sleuths & Scientists

Dear Parents and Students,

We have been falling into some great learning adventures this week. Each of the students have brought back a magnetic energy to learn. Their excitement and enthusiasm is contagious! I am proud of their hard work and determination to succeed in their own ways.

Watch out Sherlock Homes, our students have been super sleuths this week in their new mystery reading books. Many students have a hard time putting their books down, which is exciting to see. Some of the books students are reading are: The Westing Game; The Mummy, the Will, and the Crypt; The Ghost, the White House, and Me; The Witches; A to Z Mysteries: The Deadly Dungeon. Looking for clues and evidence to solve their mysteries, we will continue to learn about mystery vocabulary words and predictions.

Using their detective skills, students have been investigating rocks and minerals. We discovered how rocks are each made differently, creating different crystal structures by sorting and talking about how pasta is made differently. Using Mohl's scale and magnifying glasses, students discovered the name of many everyday minerals. They were surprised to learn how many things and ways we use rocks and minerals everyday!

Spooky, Rocky Thrills

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome back Bobcats! I hope you had a wonderful off-track filled with autumn activities: pumpkin hunting, corn mazes, raking leaves, and more. It is exciting to capture the fall leaf changes each day. I am looking forward to seeing you soon at school. I can't wait to explore our world with you! I have missed your glowing faces and bright smiles.

Spooky thrills and mysteries seem to capture our attention this time of year. In reading we are going to read and study the mystery genre. Mysteries are some of my favorite books to read because of the anticipation of the unexpected. Just when you think you have solved the mystery, you find you are wrong. I know you will become great detectives of your books!

Another exciting adventure we are about to begin is investigating Utah's rocks and minerals. Utah is famous for its variety of spectacular rock formations, including arches, spindles, mountain cliffs, canyons, and limestone with fossil treasures. We are going to learn about the many types of rocks and minerals found in Utah and are important resources.

As we return to school on Monday, I am looking to do a science experiment with pasta. I am hoping some of you would be willing to contribute to our experiment by bringing a box of pasta of all shapes and sizes, except long and skinny. Way to go Bobcats! Students were amazing super heros during our BCE Spirit Week. It was fun to see the students celebrate our school with pride. Thank you for supporting your students during the week's events at school, restaurants, and the Walk-a-thon. Our Bobcat spirit will carry us to success!

Last Wednesday, the 4th grade had the privildge to see the Utah Symphony at Hillcrest High School. All dresssed up, the boys and girls looked so handsome and pretty. They enjoyed the concert's "Magic of Music" performances, including "Harry Potter," "Midsummer's Night Dream," and "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." During the field trip students explored visualizing images through the movement of the music.

This week BCE will be participating in a wonderful hands-on social studies investigation on Wednesday. Students will join the upper grade students in an assembly, interactive activity, and follow-up assembly presentation. During this activity, students will learn about American immigrants. It will be a great learning experience for all!

To add to BCE Spirit Week, the 4th grade has a field trip on Wednesday to see the Utah Symphony at Hillcrest High School. All students in Jordan School District will be participating in this annual event. It is a neat opportunity for students to attend a symphony performance. Due to the nature of the event, students are asked to dress in their "best dress." I always enjoy seeing the students dressed up. What fun!

This past week we continued to explore story elements, specifically plot conflict. There are 4 main types of conflicts in stories including, human vs. human, human vs. self, human vs. society, and human vs. nature. It was neat to create connections of types of plots to story titles. Your students are great connectors!!

As part of our plot conflict lesson, students learned about the central theme of good vs. evil, whether inside or outside. We discussed how a character's actions and choices, not their abilities, shape who they are. It was neat to see the students explore how this central theme is true to everyday life. Stories and books are great teachers of life's important lessons! I am excited to continue our exploration of story elements. I hope you will take time to travel a new adventure with your students as they read with you.

The Magic of Reading

Dear Parents and Students,

This week our class will continue to explore the magic of reading. Last week we flew to "Neverland" with Captain Hook and Peter Pan as we investigated character behavior and physical traits. Together we leared about the importance of both a character's behavior and physical appearance in creating their character in a story. After all, what would Hook be like if his character was kind and adventurous instead of mean and revengeful. It was enchanting to learn about character traits this week. Students shared the pixie dust magic of reading with their creative connections, exciting expressions, and magical memories. I exploring the magical "Neverlands" in each book with my students. I hope you will take time to travel a new adventure with your students as they read with you.

It was also a special day on Friday for students to use the "mobile lab" of laptops. They were so excited to have the opportunity to use these technology tools in our classroom. I know students are looking forward to using them again soon!

A Bag of Jelly Beans

Dear Parents and Students,

Beans! Beans! Beans! There are lima beans, coffee beans, kidney beans and refried beans. I love them all! But our class' favorite kinds of beans are jelly beans – and every flavor, too. Cherry, grape, lemon-lime, licorice . . . YUM! Double yum for strawberry and banana.

For the past few weeks, our class has been learning about the writing process: prewrite, draft, revise, edit, and publish. Students have been working on writing a creative story about a jellybean. What awesome authors we have! Their imaginations are brilliant! Each story is unique and creative in its own way. These flavorful beans are traveling around the world, life saving heroes, and creative cooks. This week students will complete their published pieces. Their jelly bean's adventures create "delicious stories" that will make your hungry . . . not only for jelly beans, but for the good reading, too.

Amazing Adaptations!

Dear Parents and Students,

With a swoosh of a magic wand, some of our students transformed into new creatures with amazing adaptations. Students are learning about animal adaptations in Utah environments: wetlands, deserts and forests. Adaptations are structure or behavior changes in an animal that help it survive to the environments conditions.

Utah is the 2nd driest state in the United States. When the huge thunderstorm rolled through on Thursday, some of the students stared outside with big eyes at all that rain. One student even said, "I don't think we are a desert anymore. That is more than 10 inches of water." It was a record rainfall in the weather books - just over 1 inch! WOW! It is fun to see all their connections to what they are learning in real life. I hope you will continue to help your students make these connections at home.

It was fun to see all them all dressed up. I hope it will help them remember the different adaptations animals have to survive in their environments.

Dear Parents and Students,

We continue to explore Utah environments this week. It was fun to dissect our class "pet" cactus to discover its keeping "cool" adaptations in the desert. These adaptations include: big roots to soak up the water, small pores to release the water, needles to breathe easier, and a waxy surface to keep the water in. I hope your "scientists" described our experiment adventures. This week we will explore more plant and animal adaptations. Some of our students may even "try on" some adaptations themselves. Beware scientist volunteers!

Dear Parents & Students,

Welcome to a new school year! It is so exciting to start a new school year with each of you. I am excited to be your 4th grade teacher and am looking forward to a fun year. We are going to have some great learning adventures together!

I thought I would let you know a little bit about me. The most important thing to know about me is I love being a Butterfield Canyon Bobcat. I have taught 4th grade at Butterfield Canyon for 4 years, and 6th grade before that at Riverside Elementary. I believe 4th grade is the BEST grade! I love teaching and working with kids. They are always teaching me something new. I know we will grow lots together this year.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, gardening, running, playing sports (especially basketball), beading, card making, and traveling.

My favorite treats are chocolate milk, Great Harvest Bread, and homemade cookies.

I love reading, especially children’s books. It is hard to choose one favorite book, but some of them are: Sister’s Grimm, Tale of Despereaux, Harry Potter, Fablehaven, and Princess Academy.

In 4th grade, we will be exploring many fiction and nonfiction books; writing creative and true stories; discovering new math tricks like multi-digit multiplication, long division, fractions, decimals, measurement, and geometry; traveling through Utah history with Native Americans, Spanish explorers, trappers, and pioneers; and investigating our state’s water resources, weather, rocks and minerals, soils, and environments.

I can’t wait to start our learning journey together! I am excited to get to know you and spend time with you.

Wax Museum Stars

Wow! We have some amazing shining stars in our classroom. The students worked hard to write and present their "Wax Museum" reports. Butterfield Canyon was transformed into a museum of famous stars: explorers, politicians, performers, and inventors. It helped to capture our learning of Utah famous history.

At our Friday book club, students finished creating a "setting shoe box" model for their book club books. They turned out amazing! It was neat to watch the creative "construction workers" at work. It is hard to choose one favorite book, but some of them are: Sister’s Grimm, Tale of Despereaux, Harry Potter, Fablehaven, and Princess Academy.

I am excited to meet all of you on the first day of school on July 28. Parents I look forward to meeting you at Back to School morning on July 27, 9 – 9:30 am.
